Fluoride Treatments – Are They Beneficial?
By Karen, treatment assistant for Julie M Gillis, DDS
Fluoride Treatments – should your child have them? As a treatment assistant for Dr. Julie Gillis, I have the pleasure of seeing many young patients. One of the services we provide for our young patients is a fluoride treatment when they come in for their dental cleaning. Along with x-rays, cleaning and an exam with the doctor, a fluoride treatment is a very important part of your child’s visit. The goal of fluoride is to help prevent cavities and it also serves to decrease tooth sensitivity. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria that produce acids that weaken the enamel.
A Fluoride Treatment is applied directly to the tooth surfaces with a paintbrush.
Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and helps protect the teeth from damage. In our office we use fluoride varnish. Fluoride varnish is a quick and simple way to help protect teeth. Fluoride varnish is applied directly to clean teeth with a small brush.
Fluoride treatments come in several flavors and consistencies to afford the maximum in tooth protection and comfort for the patient.
One of the benefits of using a fluoride varnish is it leaches fluoride into tooth structure for several weeks after being applied. In between visits, make sure your child is using a fluoride tooth paste. Our office at 1190 Bookcliff Avenue Suite 201 in Grand Junction, Colorado would love to see you and your children. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have at 970-242-3635.

Custom Fluoride Trays – Are They Right For You?
Help prevent future decay with the use of custom fluoride trays!
Would you like to stop or decrease the amount of decay that you have?
There are many things you can do to help prevent future cavities. For most patients it is enough to brush, floss, eat responsibly, and see their dentist regularly. But for some patients this is not enough! Custom fluoride trays may be helpful for those patients who seem to have frequent new areas of decay even when they are doing all of these things.
This winning combination of fluoride trays and PreviDent may help prevent future decay and tooth loss!
One fairly easy as well as inexpensive therapy has proven to very effective for patients who are prone to extensive decay. Your dentist or a dental laboratory can prepare custom fluoride trays that fit the teeth and extend slightly onto the tissue. The patient is instructed to wear the fluoride tray loaded with Prevident 5000 for 5 minutes after breakfast and 5 minutes before bed. This regimen has the added benefit of reducing tooth sensitivity!
Clear fluoride trays are custom made to feel comfortable and help the fluoride stay close to the teeth for the recommended time.
Our office in Grand Junction, Colorado has been offering this treatment for years however with new information from current studies, we are suggesting this as an option for more patients who want to take a more active role in preventing decay. The fluoride trays and made from a soft plastic that is pressure formed against a model of the patient’s teeth. As long as the teeth do not have extensive dental treatment which would change their shape, the trays can be worn for years. Please call our office if you have any questions about this treatment or if you would like more information.
Your teeth really can last a lifetime!
Yours for better dental health,
Julie Gillis DDS
